Equal attention is given to the physical processes involved in milling sugar cane and refining sugar. Most Brazilian sugar mills have efficiency teams dedicated to streamlining and optimizing all plant processes. Recycling is also a high priority, with sugar cane fiber often burned to power the facility. Brazilian mills are so efficient that they frequently sell excess power to the national grid, as the energy generated from burning bagasse (the fibrous part of the sugar cane discarded after crushing) exceeds the plant’s needs.
